Best Minneapolis Neighborhoods to Move to in 2026

New developments, light rail lines and a strong food scene keep shifting which parts of Minneapolis people want to live in. We move people into and out of these neighborhoods every week, so this guide covers two things: what each area is like to live in, and what moving there actually involves.

1. The North Loop: Still the Reigning Champion of Cool

Converted brick warehouses, new glass condo towers and some of the busiest restaurant blocks in the city, all a short walk from Target Field and the Mississippi riverfront.

• Best for: Young professionals, food lovers and anyone who wants to walk to work downtown.
• Housing: Lofts and condos, mostly in managed buildings.
• Moving tip: Almost every building wants a reserved freight elevator, a loading dock slot and a certificate of insurance. Book them the day you book movers. Our North Loop movers handle the building paperwork for you.

2. Northeast (Arts District): Creative Energy and Community

Northeast is home to the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District and Art-A-Whirl, the open studio weekend held every spring, plus a long list of breweries and a strong neighborhood feel.

• Best for: Creatives, first-time buyers and people who want a neighborhood bar they can walk to.
• Housing: Older duplexes and single-family homes, plus new apartment buildings near Central Avenue and the river.
• Moving tip: Duplex stairs are narrow and often turn. Measure large sofas before move day, or ask our Northeast Minneapolis movers to check them at the walkthrough.

3. Southwest: The Lake Life Within City Limits

Linden Hills, Armatage and Fulton sit minutes from Bde Maka Ska and Lake Harriet, with tree-lined streets, small commercial corners and some of the most in-demand houses in the city.

• Best for: Families and outdoor lovers who still want city living.
• Housing: 1920s to 1940s houses with full basements, tight stairways and plenty of built-in storage.
• Moving tip: Older homes hide a lot of volume in the basement and attic, and the woodwork is worth protecting. Our professional packing services and the Linden Hills movers page cover how we handle it.

4. Longfellow: The Rising Star of South Minneapolis

Walkable blocks of bungalows between Hiawatha Avenue and the Mississippi River gorge, connected to downtown and the airport by the Blue Line light rail, with Minnehaha Falls at the south end.

• Best for: Commuters, cyclists and buyers looking for more house for the money.
• Housing: Bungalows and story-and-a-half homes with alley garages.
• Moving tip: Many homes load best from the alley. Tell us which side has the easier door, and see our Longfellow movers page.

5. Bryn Mawr: The Village in the City

A small, hilly neighborhood wrapped by Theodore Wirth Park, Cedar Lake and Bassett Creek, about five minutes from downtown.

• Best for: Families and anyone who wants trails at the end of the street.
• Housing: Early 1900s houses on sloped lots with front steps.
• Moving tip: Hills and front steps mean a longer carry. We plan the truck position first, as our Bryn Mawr movers page explains.

How to choose the right neighborhood

• Commute first. If you work downtown or at the airport, check the light rail and bus routes before you look at listings.
• Decide on building or house. Condo and loft living is easy day to day but comes with building move rules. A house means more space and a bigger move.
• Visit in winter if you can. Street parking, plowing and walkability feel very different in January.
• Not sure yet? Our Minneapolis relocation guide covers cost of living, schools and jobs.

Making the Move

Coming from another state? Our long-distance moving crews run one truck door to door with a firm delivery date. Need a gap between leases? Secure storage holds everything until the new place is ready.

Quick Tips:

• Book early: Summer and the end of each month fill up fast.
• Purge before you pack: Less volume means a smaller quote.
• Label by room: It makes unloading faster at the new place.

Frequently asked questions

Which Minneapolis neighborhood is best for families? Southwest (Linden Hills, Fulton, Armatage) and Bryn Mawr are the usual picks for parks and quieter streets. Longfellow is a good value option.

Which neighborhood is best for young professionals? The North Loop and Northeast, for walkability, restaurants and short commutes downtown.

Do movers need a permit to park in Minneapolis? Buildings often set their own loading rules, and busy streets can need a reserved space. We check this at the walkthrough so the truck has a legal spot on move day.
