Fragile items require special attention during a move. One broken family heirloom or damaged piece of electronics can turn an otherwise successful move into a disappointment. Our professional packers have protected millions of fragile items – here are the techniques we use every day.
Before you start, gather these supplies:
Wrap each dish individually in packing paper. Stack no more than 3-4 plates together, then wrap the bundle. Place dishes vertically in the box (like records) – they're stronger on their edges. Fill gaps with crumpled paper and ensure nothing shifts when you gently shake the box.
Stuff the inside of each glass with crumpled paper, then wrap the entire glass. For stemware, wrap the stem separately with extra padding. Use cell boxes (divided boxes) when possible. Place heavier items at the bottom and lighter glasses on top. Never stack glasses inside each other.
If possible, use original boxes and packaging. Take photos of cable connections before unplugging. Remove batteries from remotes and small devices. Wrap screens in soft padding, never packing paper directly. Label cables and store them with their devices. Use anti-static bubble wrap for sensitive components.
Apply painter's tape in an X pattern across glass surfaces to prevent shattering. Wrap in bubble wrap with bubbles facing out. Use corner protectors for frames. Place in picture boxes or create custom cardboard sleeves. Mark boxes clearly with "FRAGILE" and "THIS SIDE UP."
Remove shades and bulbs separately. Wrap bases in bubble wrap or packing paper. Pack lampshades in their own boxes, right-side up, with tissue paper inside. Never nest shades inside each other – they'll get crushed.
