15 Moving Day Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Moving day can be chaotic, but many of the most stressful problems are completely preventable. After thousands of moves across Minnesota, we've seen every mistake in the book. Here's how to avoid the most common moving day pitfalls.

1. Not Being Packed When Movers Arrive

This is the number one issue we encounter. When movers arrive and you're still packing, it delays the entire move and costs you extra in hourly charges. Have everything boxed and ready to load.

2. Forgetting to Empty Drawers

Leaving items in dresser drawers adds significant weight and can damage furniture. Empty all drawers and pack contents separately in labeled boxes.

3. Not Reserving Parking

In Minneapolis and St. Paul, street parking can be scarce. Reserve spots at both locations or arrange building loading dock access in advance.

4. Overpacking Boxes

Heavy boxes are harder to carry and more likely to break. Keep boxes under 50 pounds and use small boxes for heavy items like books.

5. Not Disconnecting Appliances

Refrigerators need 24 hours to defrost. Washing machines need hoses disconnected and drums secured. Prepare appliances the day before.

6. Leaving Hazardous Materials

Movers cannot transport propane tanks, paint, chemicals, or ammunition. Dispose of or transport these items yourself.
